WPD to DOCX Converter

Free online tool to convert WordPerfect (.wpd) documents to Microsoft Word (.docx). No signup, no email, no install.

WordPerfect was the dominant word processor of the 1980s and early 1990s. Millions of WPD files survive today in US courts, law offices, government agencies, and personal archives — but modern Microsoft Word no longer opens them natively. This converter bridges that gap: upload your file and get a fully editable .docx back in seconds. Your document is processed over an encrypted HTTPS connection by CloudConvert and is never stored on our servers.

✓ No signup required ✓ Files deleted after conversion ✓ WordPerfect 5.x through X9 ✓ Works on any browser

How to convert a WPD file to DOCX

The converter at the top of this page handles the full process in three steps.

  1. Select your .wpd file. Click the upload area or drag your WordPerfect file directly onto it. Only files with a .wpd extension are accepted. If your file uses a different extension (such as .wp or .wp5), rename it to .wpd first.
  2. Click Convert. The file is sent over an encrypted HTTPS connection to our processing partner CloudConvert, which performs the conversion and returns a DOCX file. For typical documents this takes a few seconds.
  3. Download your .docx file. When the conversion finishes, click the download button to save the result. You can then open the file in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice Writer, Apple Pages, or any modern word processor.

If something goes wrong, see the troubleshooting section below.

What is a WPD file?

A WPD file is a document created by Corel WordPerfect, a word processor first released in 1979 by Satellite Software International. WordPerfect was the dominant word processor through most of the 1980s and very early 1990s, before being overtaken by Microsoft Word as personal computing moved from DOS to Windows. The product later passed through Novell and is now owned by Corel.

WPD files use a proprietary binary format that has evolved across major versions. The format encodes text, formatting codes, embedded objects, headers and footers, footnotes, tables, and metadata. Unlike modern document formats such as DOCX or ODT, WPD is not based on XML and is not openly documented, which is one reason modern software often cannot open WPD files directly.

Even though WordPerfect lost the broad consumer market decades ago, you may still run into WPD files in several common situations:

  • Legal documents. US law firms held on to WordPerfect long after most other industries moved away from it. Many older briefs, pleadings, contracts, and case files are stored as WPD.
  • Government and court records. US federal courts and several state and federal agencies used WordPerfect heavily for decades. Archived records and older filings are frequently in WPD format.
  • Family or estate files. Personal documents written in WordPerfect during the 1980s, 1990s, or 2000s often survive on old hard drives, floppy disks, ZIP disks, and CD backups.
  • Academic archives. Older research papers, thesis drafts, and university administrative documents from the WordPerfect era are commonly WPD.
  • Files from longtime WordPerfect users. A small but loyal user base, including some technical writers, paralegals, and authors, continues to use WordPerfect today.

Modern Microsoft Word, starting around Word 2016, dropped native support for WPD files. Word 2010 and earlier had a built-in WPD import filter, but it was removed in later releases. That is the gap this converter fills.

What is a DOCX file?

DOCX is the standard file format used by Microsoft Word since Word 2007. Unlike the older binary .doc format, DOCX is an XML-based format wrapped in a ZIP archive. It is defined by the Office Open XML standard, published as ECMA-376 and later as ISO/IEC 29500.

Because DOCX is open, well documented, and widely adopted, it is supported by virtually every modern word processor:

  • Microsoft Word (desktop, web, and mobile)
  • Google Docs (with full edit support)
  • LibreOffice Writer and OpenOffice Writer
  • Apple Pages
  • WPS Office, OnlyOffice, and most other office suites
  • Most online editors and content management systems

Converting an old WordPerfect document to DOCX gives you a file that you can open and edit in almost any environment, and that will keep working long into the future.

WPD vs DOCX: what transfers, what doesn't

Converting between two different word processing formats is rarely perfect. WordPerfect and Microsoft Word use different internal models for some features, so a few things may need manual review after conversion.

What converts reliably

  • Body text, paragraph structure, and line breaks
  • Headings and heading hierarchy
  • Bold, italic, underline, strikethrough
  • Font size and font color
  • Bulleted and numbered lists, including nested lists
  • Tables and table contents
  • Page breaks and section breaks
  • Basic page setup: margins, orientation, page size
  • Footnotes and endnotes
  • Headers and footers
  • Embedded images (most common formats)

What may need manual adjustment

  • Embedded fonts. WordPerfect documents sometimes embed fonts that are not installed on your system. The converter substitutes a similar standard font; you may want to manually pick a different font in Word.
  • Pleading paper formatting. WordPerfect's legal pleading features (line numbering, vertical rules) do not have a one-to-one equivalent in DOCX and may need to be reapplied using Word's legal templates.
  • Reveal Codes. WordPerfect's signature feature for showing formatting codes does not exist in Word. The codes themselves are translated into Word's equivalent formatting, but you cannot toggle a Reveal Codes view in the converted document.
  • Macros. WordPerfect macros are written in a different language than Word's VBA. Macros are not transferred and would need to be rewritten.
  • Complex equations. Equations created in WordPerfect's equation editor may convert as images rather than editable Word equations.

Why convert WordPerfect to Word

If you only ever open the file once, a free WordPerfect viewer might be enough. But conversion to DOCX is usually the right answer for any of these situations:

  • You need to edit the document. Most modern editors handle DOCX but not WPD.
  • You need to share it. Sending a WPD file in 2026 means the recipient almost certainly cannot open it without help. DOCX is universally readable.
  • You need long-term accessibility. WPD is a dead-end format. Each year, fewer tools support it. Converting now ensures the document is still readable a decade from today.
  • You need to search the contents. Search tools, document indexes, and AI assistants all handle DOCX better than WPD.
  • You need to feed the content into another system. CMS uploaders, e-discovery platforms, and document management systems generally expect DOCX or PDF.

How your file is handled

We know that WordPerfect documents often contain sensitive material — legal filings, medical records, personal correspondence, financial documents. Here is exactly how a conversion works:

  1. Encrypted upload. When you click Convert, your file is sent over an encrypted HTTPS connection directly to our processing partner CloudConvert (cloudconvert.com), a long-established document conversion service.
  2. Server-side conversion. CloudConvert parses the WordPerfect binary format and re-encodes the document as Office Open XML (DOCX), then returns a temporary download URL.
  3. Automatic deletion. CloudConvert deletes uploaded files and converted output automatically after a short retention period (typically 24 hours), as described in their data protection policy.
  4. No retention on our side. wpd2docx.com itself never stores your file. We act as the interface — your browser sends the file to CloudConvert, CloudConvert returns the result, and your browser triggers the download. Your file does not pass through any wpd2docx.com database or storage.
  5. No account, no email. You do not need to identify yourself in any way to use the converter.

For full details, see the privacy policy below. If you are converting a document where third-party processing is not acceptable, do not upload it; consider using a desktop WordPerfect viewer or installing a local converter instead.

Troubleshooting

My file won't upload

Check that the file extension is .wpd. If your file has a different extension such as .wp, .wp5, .wp6, or no extension at all, rename it to end in .wpd before uploading. Also confirm the file is not corrupted by opening it in WordPerfect or a WordPerfect viewer first.

The conversion is taking a long time

Most conversions complete in 5–15 seconds. Very large files with many embedded images may take a minute or two. If the status remains stuck for more than three minutes, refresh the page and try again.

The download is empty or won't open

If the downloaded file is very small (under 1 KB), the conversion likely failed. Try again with a fresh page load. If it still fails, the source file may use an older or unusual WordPerfect variant.

The formatting looks wrong in Word

Some adjustment is normal between two different word processing formats. In Word, try View > Layout mode to see the document natively, then adjust fonts, line spacing, and page margins as needed. For documents with heavy formatting, copy-pasting body content into a fresh Word document with your preferred styles is sometimes faster than fixing every formatting carryover.

The text shows strange characters

WordPerfect used a different character encoding than modern Word. The converter handles standard mappings, but very old documents (WordPerfect 4.x and early 5.x) may contain characters from less common WordPerfect character sets that don't translate cleanly. Opening such files in a recent WordPerfect version and re-saving usually resolves it.

Frequently asked questions

Is this converter free?

Yes. The converter is completely free for both personal and commercial use. There is no subscription, no signup, no email required, and no daily conversion limit imposed on individual users.

Do you keep copies of my files?

No. Your file is transmitted over HTTPS to our processing partner CloudConvert, which performs the conversion and deletes the file automatically after a short period. wpd2docx.com itself never stores, views, or shares your file. See How your file is handled for the full chain of custody.

Do I need to install anything?

No. The converter runs in your web browser. It works on Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, Android, and iOS without any plugin or app.

Is there a file size limit?

The current upload limit is 100 MB. WordPerfect documents are usually well under that — most personal documents are under 1 MB.

Will my formatting be preserved?

For text-heavy documents, yes. Body text, headings, lists, basic styling, tables, and footnotes transfer reliably. See the WPD vs DOCX section above for details about what does and doesn't translate cleanly.

Can I convert multiple files at once?

The current version of the tool handles one file at a time. For a batch of files, run them through the converter one after another.

Does the converter work on mobile?

Yes. The page is fully responsive. You can pick a WordPerfect document from your phone or tablet and download the converted DOCX directly to your device.

What about password-protected files?

Password-protected WordPerfect files must be unlocked in WordPerfect (or a compatible viewer) before conversion. The converter does not attempt to bypass document passwords.

Which WordPerfect versions are supported?

Common WordPerfect files from WP 5 onward — WordPerfect 5.x, 6.x, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, and the X-series (X3 through X9 and later). Very old DOS-era files (WordPerfect 4.x and earlier) may not convert cleanly because they use older character sets and formatting codes. If a file fails, opening it in WordPerfect and re-saving in a newer version often works around the issue.

Can I go the other direction (DOCX to WPD)?

This site only converts WPD to DOCX. Most users want to move off WordPerfect rather than onto it, so we focus on the more common direction.

Why does this exist?

Because Microsoft Word stopped supporting WPD imports years ago, and most online converters either charge for the conversion, require email signups, or quietly retain your files. We wanted a clean, free, no-signup option that does one thing well.
